hmm, this could be straightforward, in which case I'll feel really stupid, but it seems like the type of question that's on the impossible test (online game) which my class has been doing so I'll try to be in that mindset since you said that you gave us the answer...so my guess would be is it language?

not in the sentence, in the phrase. If you are told that there are 3 words in: the English language, then the 3rd word is language
