[Enter: Caleb and a rebel from the Mountains]
Well hidden behind some shrubs, Caleb and his companion stopped to observe the situation in the courtyard. The rebels were still there. And still no guards. Honestly, if not for the fact that everything was so calm Caleb would have believed that Phobos is dead and no one gives a d**n about anything anymore. And what were the rebels doing there for so long? Was he the only rebel with brains? "So what's the plan?" the rebel asked. "We go in. We burn things down. We leave." Caleb grinned. "Simple enough, no?" "Yes, but are you sure you want to burn the library? It's not like its existence is making things harder for us. On the contrary, I don't think the princess would be happy about it." "I don't care anymore." Caleb replied. "I'm not fighting this rebellion for her. She clearly isn't on our side. The things Vathek said lead me to believe that she hates us. She's clearly in league with Phobos - or at least Cedric. So why should I fight for her? How is her life more valuable than that of a simple peasant?" "Well, she is the princess." the rebel stated. "Oh yes. But it's not something she accomplished herself. Therefore it's not worthy of respect." "But..." "Enough!" Caleb interrupted his friend. "No time for this now anyway. We have work to do." "I'm just saying that there is no point in burning the library." "Perhaps... you're right." Caleb nodded. "Nevertheless, we have to infiltrate the castle. So let's get going."

*Blunk runs into the castles main gates. He's looking for Vathek*
"Blunk must find Big Blue and give him important message from Caleb." Blunk said.
*Blunk runs through the castle doors to continue his mission*

Guard 1: *opens eyes* "Wha-wha-what was that?" Guard 2: *waves hand while keeping eyes closed* "It's nothing. Go back to sleep." Guard 1 resumes sleeping. [Will^, Irma^, & Taranee^: Enter from Mogriffs' Lair] They appear behind a cluster of giant black roses to the right of the gate. Irma^: "So... How are we getting inside?"Will^: "Not like this obviously. Our guardian forms will draw too much attention."She twirls upon one leg ballet style as she transforms into a Meridian soldier. Soldier 1: "We'll need to use disguises."Irma^ become another soldier. Taranee morphs into Jonathan Ludmoore. Soldier 2: "Hey! Wait a sec! We're supposed to be soldiers--not..."Soldier 1: *covers soldier 2's mouths* "Shh! We don't want to draw any unnecessary attention."Guard 1: *opens eyes* "That's it. This time I'm sure I heard something." *goes to investigate* "M-master Ludmoore? What are you doing...?" Jon: *cuts him off* "What's it look like I'm doing? I'm having two soldiers escort me to the castle. Why? You tired of watching the main gate all day? Want me to send you to the prisons instead?"Guard 1: "N-no, Master." *moves aside* "As you were." The deceptive trio go inside. [Jon, Soldier 1, & Soldier 2: Exit to Halls]

[Enter: Vathek from the courtyard]
Upon leaving the castle, Vathek stopped and looked around. The city stood before him in all its misery. People were shambling around lifelessly in dark, dirty streets - it was a surreal sight. Desperation is a weapon far more powerful than soldiers, it seems. A broken bone heals much faster than a broken spirit. Vathek sighed and looked behind him, at the huge dark castle. It looked like an engorged spider, slowly draining life from all around him. And to think he used to be an obedient servant to these monsters.
[Enter: Caleb from the city]
Somebody bumped into Vathek's back and made him stumble a little.
"Watch it!" He growled while turning around. "I'm not that hard to spot, if you just raise your d*mn head up!"
The offender, however, turned out to be none other than Caleb.
"Caleb?" Vathek said with a shocked expression. "What the hell are you doing here?"
"This and that." Came a strange answer. Upon taking a closer look, Vathek saw how emotionless and tired Caleb's face was. The blank stare on the rebel leader's face frightened Vathek to no limit. He looked just like the people of Meridian - already defeated.
"If anyone catches you, you're a dead man!"
"I don't care." Caleb sighed. "I feel plenty dead already."
"Shut the hell up!" Vathek could feel his anger rising. "You of all people have no right to speak like that!"
"Why? Am I somehow unique?"
"D*mn right you're unique. Everyone's hope for freedom is in your hands."
"Ah, but that's just it." Caleb said in a strangely arrogant manner, smirking all the while. "Maybe I don't want to be unique. Maybe I just want to be like everyone else - free to pursue my own happiness."
"There will be no happiness here while Phobos is alive! Vathek clenched his fists. "You know that!"
"Maybe so." Caleb nodded. "But my happiness lies elsewhere."
"What are you talking about? Was it not your dream to liberate the people there? To return hope into people's eyes and warmth into their hearts? To hold your head up high, proudly facing a new tomorrow? To show Elyon the truth - to give her what's righfully hers? I still remember those speeches, Caleb. I still remember your feelings, so don't stare at me with those eyes of a dead fish!"
Caleb chuckled. He didn't seem to be moved at all.
"Yeah. It's as you said, Vathek." He leaned against a wall and looked up. "It was my dream to liberate people. It was my dream to give them hope and joy, to reveal the truth and so on. Until one day I realized that it wasn't my place to do any of that. Fighting for these people that have given up hope... It's a lost cause. It's like trying to live their lives for them. Lending them your strength. Your heart. Your feelings. Until there's nothing left. They can't think for themselves. Their freedom is theirs to fight for. Yet they rely on me for every d**n thing. And as soon as I'm gone, they turn to a new leader - even if that's Phobos. These people will remain being slaves for the rest of their lives."
Vathek felt his anger - a powerful, primal force welling up in his heart. "Shut up." He said gritting his teeth.
"I don't want any of this. I started this joke of a rebellion because it was the only way. The other alternative was dying. But now I was shown new things. I was shown what life could be - and is, elsewhere. I was shown... love. Someone cared about me. Someone looked at me and saw a man, not some polished hero figure to put in front to scare away the shadows. Now that I've tasted that happiness - this pure, honest feeling - that's all I want. It doesn't have anything to do with this dirty hole or that idiotic rebellion of mine."
Vathek acted without thinking. He lifted his heavy fist and hit Caleb in the face. The rebel leader fell face down. He didn't try getting up.
"Despicable." Vathek said quietly. "You think anyone would love such a freak? Spitting on the virtues of the kind-hearted, betraying the people you vowed to protect... I can't think of anything worse than that."
He started climbing down the stairs. There was nothing left for him there.
"Go ahead and try living your new life. I'm sure you'll have no regrets, looking into the eyes of your beloved."
[Exit: Vathek to the Forest]
Caleb didn't even bother standing up. He just turned so he could face the night sky and breathed out. It was painful. Blood was flowing down his face.
He knew Vathek was right - about everything. But Caleb didn't want to think about it, not yet. For now, he just wanted to enjoy the peace emanating from the stars.
Before he got back to doing the right thing.

Poke. Poke poke.
Caleb opened his eyes and saw a tall, muscular man, carefully poking him with the blunt end of his spear. His spiky armor and well made weapon showed that he was a soldier of Phobos'. In other words, an enemy.
"What the hell are you doing here?" The guard asked. "Wallowing in selft pity." Caleb answered, glancing at the starry sky. It emanated a cold, but strangely pleasant energy, healing his tired soul. "I'm pretty sure that's forbidden. At least within the castle grounds." "Oh. I'll keep that in mind." "Wait a second..." The guard knelt and took a closer look at Caleb. "You're that... rebel leader!" "What gave me away?" Caleb asked. "What didn't give you away, smartass. Now get up, I'm taking you to the prison." "I'll just escape, like I've done several times before. Heck, I started the rebellion from Phobos' garden. And if you attack me, I'll simply kill you, like I've killed dozens of your buddies." "So what are you saying?" The guard narrowed his eyes. His expression resembled that of a wolf - a predator of cunning, not of fury. "Go sound the alarm or whatever. Just give me a couple more moments. I'm not quite through with my journey of self-discovery."
Actually, he was about done. Caleb even came up with a great idea to liven up the place.
Surprisingly, the guard chuckled. He was older than most - unusually old for a minion of Phobos'. He must have been smart enough to figure out the likely outcome of their confrontation. Even now, lying on the ground seemingly defenseless, Caleb had a dagger ready. One sudden movement and the dagger would end up piercing the soldier's throat. The soldier must have figured out something like that, because he stood up and slowly stepped back. He didn't look afraid, just cautious.
"Sure, I can do that." The guard said with a grin. "But you owe me a drink for this."
Now it was Caleb's turn to laugh. What the hell was up with this guard? Where did they even find this guy? That was some pretty big treason he was committing and he did that without a care in the world. Caleb almost considered inviting him to join the rebellion, but it'd have been too risky an action.
"Deal." Caleb said, slowly standing up and stretching his back. "Well then, it was nice meeting you." "Likewise." The soldier turned away and entered the courtyard. Caleb listened for a while and, sure enough, a loud alarm echoed through the palace. Soon he heard numerous footsteps approaching.
The blood rushed joyfully through the rebel leader's veins as he turned tail and ran. Truly, in the midst of danger all unnecessary thoughts disappeared.
"I bet Phobos is gonna love this." Caleb said to himself and disappeared in the streets.
