[Enter: Will and Cornelia from the Cafeteria]
*Will walked in cautiously. She always got a weird feeling being in the History room. It always seemed like Mr. Collins wanted to tell her something with his eyes, or was constantly checking up on her. She noticed Cornelia already walking toward her seat and, with a jolt, she moved to hers too*
Let's just get this over with...and then I can get that thing after school over with too...

Is it just me or does there appear to be a double dose of History today? [Andrew: Enter from The Front Yard] He sits in an empty desk near the back of the room.

"Alright, class. It's time to take out the rough drafts of your homework essay which are due today. We will be peer editing."
*Will looked around in slight panic as everyone rummaged through their notebooks and backpacks*
Since when have we had an essay? Could he have assigned it last class when she was absent?
*Will raised her hand*
"Um, Mr. Collins?"
"Yes?" he said, looking up from his own papers.
"I was sick last class and didn't know that we had an assignment."
"Did none of your peers give you the assignment?"
*Will looked at Cornelia*
"No."
*Mr. Collins sighed*
"Then you have a lot of catching up to do, Miss Vandom. I suggest you get the notes from somebody and work on copying those down today and start working on the essay-the topic on the board- if you can. You'll have to stay after to finish the essay and you can get it peer edited on your own time to bring to class next time, that way you don't fall even further behind in the class."
*Will brought her hand down slowly. She had somewhere to be after school. This was going to take hours. She knew Matt had detention, but didn't know how long that lasted*
"Yes, Sir," Will said.
"Okay, class, back to peer editing. I'll come around to make sure you have your essays and if not, here comes a big 0 for your rough draft."
*Mr. Collins started to pass through the rows of desks with his grade book and Will saw Cornelia lean over*
"Hey," Cornelia said. "Here you can copy my notes. Sorry for not warning you.
"It's okay," Will said as she gratefully took the spiral notebook and flipped to the date of last the last class' notes. "I guess the day isn't nearly over for me."

Andrew: W-what? History? When the hell did I have history in my class schedule? Oh yeah... *face palms* I skipped my last class & went straight to detention. Might as well try to blend in.He takes outs a sheet of paper & starts writing about the history of Magic the Gathering.

*Will started to copy Cornelia's notes from the previous lesson onto her own notebook as everyone else paired up with someone to edit papers. Mr. Collins continued to go around the class*
"Mr. Hornby?" he said in surprise. "I do hope you know that you are quite early for your detention. Do you not have a class right now?"
*Will froze*
What? You've got to be kidding me.
*Will looked around and indeed Andrew was sitting there in the back of the classroom. She gave him a pondering look, wondering what he was doing during their class. Cornelia caught her attention with a whistle and Will turned back around in her seat to continue copying the notes. She really needed to get this done*

Andrew: *gulp* "I-I thought I'd come early to make sure I wouldn't be late for my detention." "But I did do a history assignment." *shows Mr Collin's his paper* Dr. Richard Garfield, the creator of Magic: The Gathering, was a professor at Whitman College in 1993. He worked in his spare time with local volunteer playtesters to help refine the game during the 1993 school year. Peter Adkison (then CEO of Wizards of the Coast games company) first met with Richard Garfield to discuss Garfield's new game RoboRally. Adkison was enthusiastic about the game, but decided that Wizards of the Coast lacked the resources to produce it at that point. He did enjoy Garfield's ideas and mentioned that he was looking for a portable game that could be played in the downtime that frequently occurs at gaming conventions. Garfield returned and presented the general outline of the concept of a Trading Card Game. Adkison immediately saw the potential of the game and agreed to produce it.[2] After two years of development Magic: The Gathering underwent a general release on 5 August 1993.[3]
While the game was simply called "Magic" through most of playtesting, when the game had to be officially named a lawyer informed them that Magic was too unspecific to be copyrighted. "Mana Clash" was instead chosen to be the name used in the first solicitation of the game. Everybody involved with the game still called it Magic, though. After further consultation with the lawyer it was decided to rename the game to Magic: The Gathering, thus making the name able to be trademarked.[4]
A patent was granted to Wizards of the Coast in 1997 for "a novel method of game play and game components that in one embodiment are in the form of trading cards" that includes claims covering games whose rules include many of Magic's elements in combination, including concepts such as changing orientation of a game component to indicate use (referred to in the Magic and Vampire: The Eternal Struggle rules as "tapping") and constructing a deck by selecting cards from a larger pool.[5] The patent has aroused criticism from some observers, who believe some of its claims to be invalid.[6] In 2003, the patent was an element of a larger legal dispute between Wizards of the Coast and Nintendo, regarding trade secrets related to Nintendo's Pokémon Trading Card Game. The legal action was settled out of court, and its terms were not disclosed.[7]
The success of the initial edition prompted a reissue later in 1993, along with expansions to the game. Arabian Nights was released as the first expansion in December 1993. New expansions and revisions of the base game ("Core Sets") have since been released on a regular basis, amounting to four releases a year.[note 3] While the essence of the game has always stayed the same, the rules of Magic have undergone three major revisions with the release of the Revised Edition in 1994, Classic Edition in 1999, and Magic 2010 in July 2009.[8] With the release of the Eighth Edition in 2003, Magic also received a major visual redesign.
In 1996, Wizards of the Coast established the "Pro Tour",[9] a circuit of tournaments where players can compete for sizable cash prizes over the course of a single weekend-long tournament. In 2009 the top prize is US$40,000.[10] Sanctioned through The DCI, the tournaments added an element of prestige to the game by virtue of the cash payouts and media coverage from within the community. As of 2009 Wizards of the Coast has given out more than $30,000,000 in prizes at various professional tournaments, including Pro Tours, Grand Prixs, and National championships.[11]
While unofficial methods of online play existed previously,[note 4] Magic Online ("MTGO" or "Modo"), an official online version of the game, was released in 2002. A new, updated version of Magic Online was released in April 2008. Andrew: "S-see?"

"Hmm," Mr. Collins said, clearly impressed. "I suppose that would suffice. You're not getting any early time out of detention though just because you decided to come before school ended in the middle of my class."
*Mr. Collins rubbed his chin*
"But now I need to see the end of that essay before your detention lets out. Burn out that angry fuel from your mind, not your fists this time."
*Mr. Collins walked away and Will suddenly noticed that he was next to her*
"Catching up, Vandom?" he asked.
"Um, yes Sir," she responded. "Cornelia let me borrow her notes."
"That's good, good," he said, in a much lower tone. He looked quite nervous actually. Will's eyebrows shot up in curiosity.
"Um, well yes I was wondering if your mother had told you anything-"
"My mother?" Will questioned in confusion. "Wait, was there a parent conference about my grades without me knowing?"
"Well, uh, not quite," he continued in a much lower voice. He tried to laugh it off. "Well if nothing was said then I will just have to wait. Continue on with your note taking and start that essay as soon as possible."
*Will stared at him in wonder as he sat back at his desk and immerged himself into grading papers*
That was...odd.
*Will continued to tackle her notes as the time started ticking away*

Upon hearing a familiar voice, he looks up to see Will talking with Mr. Collins. A great pain fills his heart as he yearns for what he can never have. If only there was some way he could convince her to feel the feelings for him that he feels for her...
Alas, some things only happen in fairy tales. But that doesn't stop him from watching her write. Rarely does one get to see an angel up close, it would be unwise for him to pass up on such a wonderful blessing.

"10 minutes left," Mr. Collins announced. "You should give the essays back to the owner now and look over your own paper. Add any corrections and start packing up. The final draft is due tomorrow."
*Will, in a slight panic over her increasing workload, quickly finished copying Cornelia's notes and gave the spiral back to her friend with a quick "thanks." She flipped to a new page and looked at the topic on the board, pondering it. She hit her pencil to her cheek a few times and then began to work on her introduction while everybody else was reaching a conclusion for today*
Lucky, Will thought darkly. It's going to take an hour or two to write this...

With class over, Andrew quickly approaches Will before she runs off. He speaks in a low voice so only Will can hear. Andrew: "Um, Will? Is it true that you don't want to go out with anyone right now?" "Or were you lying because you didn't want to hurt me by telling me the truth--that you've already made plans to do something with Matt tonight?"

*Will looked down, thinking*
"I don't know," she admitted. "My life is just really complicated so I don't know what I'm going to do. I'm not in the mood right now to be doing stuff though. I need to finish this essay, grab some stuff for the dormouse at the pet shop, and go home."
*She paused and thought about the other thing he said*
"Go with Matt tonight? Sorry I don't have any plans to go out."

*Will thingyed her head slightly to the side in confusion*
"Um, I guess you can do whatever you want. Why are you asking me?"
Seriously, I'm not his mom.
"Well, that is enough chit-chat from you, Hornby," Mr. Collins interjected. "You need to start your detention. And Will, I suggest you start that essay."
"Uh, right. I'll get back to it," Will said as she sat back in her seat and started working on the first body paragraph of her essay
