[Enter: Vathek from the Castle; Lord Cedric from the Clearing]
"Accursed brat," Cedric whispered looking back and then bumped into Vathek. "Vathek! My friend, what are you doing here?" Vathek looked at Cedric and noticed how tired and frustrated he was. Even after battles and long period of training, Cedric was always able to look confident and strong. But now he seemed almost drained. "I am... Well, just strolling around." Vathek replied. "What about you? You don't look so well." "Is that so?" Cedric said in a sarcastic voice. "Believe me, I'm fine. I just have a spoiled prince and a stupid brat riding on my back all the time, that's all." "You shouldn't talk about Phobos that way." "Right now I can do that." Cedric replied."I can do one thing better than he does and that's why I'm irreplaceable." "What's that?" Vathek asked. "Crawling around people like a slave. That's exactly what I was doing not so long ago. I was delighting our dear Elyon with my company." Vathek looked down and said carefully "I thought you like the kid." "I used to would be more accurate." Cedric smiled. "My word, if she'll keep it up, she'll soon be more arrogant than Phobos himself. She even dares to order me around now. Me, her only d**n friend!" "A lot has happened to her, Cedric." Vathek replied."All these things in such a short time - it's natural that she's acting differently." "You can say that, my friend." Cedric answered, looking at the sky. "But not even this can change someone's nature. I thought that Elyon's nature was that of a kind and considerate girl, but it seems I was wrong." Vathek looked confused "Aren't you two trying to make her vengeful?" "We are... Or at least I am," Cedric laughed."Phobos, on the other hands is doing... something else. But we're trying to make her hate the guardians, not us! If she'd be as... as kind as she used to be, it wouldn't be a problem. She has a reason to hate the guardians - they tricked her and all that - but why be arrogant to me?! Her only friend!" "Friend? You're playing with her, Cedric. You're no friend to her." "That's where you are wrong, my friend." Cedric answered. "I was actually... don't tell this to anyone. I was starting to regret that she'll have to die... eventually. I was starting to like her, to need her. But all that changed in a matter of minutes. If I allow Phobos to insult me and order me around, it doesn't give anyone else the right to do that!" Cedric hissed angrily and poison started flowing from his fangs. Vathek observed him for a while and then said "Maybe you're being too..." "I'm not being too anything!" Cedric shouted. "Unless you tried to say too awesome, but I doubt that. I'm not being too anything! I'm not too lazy, not too angry, not too stupid, not too pushy, not too anything! I'm doing everything better than anyone else could! You try to interact with that brat and she'll send you flying, I'm sure!"
"It's not like you to complain." Vathek stated. "Yes, that's right." Cedric nodded."And I'm not doing that. People complain when they can't change anything. I, on the other hand, know what to do. And the day approaches. I just have to play along a bit more." "I see..."
Cedric sighed. He shouldn't have done that, what if Elyon decided to follow him and now is listening? No, no, no. She has no reason to suspect him or to hide from him. Besides, Cedric would have probably sensed her presence anyways. "What about you, Vathek?" He asked. "You don't look very happy either." "That may be. I guess... I'm just too tired to do things we do." "What kind of things?" "Well..." Vathek started reluctantly. "For one, I don't like killing innocent people." "You're not doing that, Vathek." Cedric answered. "Rebels are innocent people, Cedric." Vathek looked him in the eyes. "And I've killed more than my share." "Rebels... They're not innocent. They stand in our way and that's enough to make them guilty." "They're fighting for the right thing!" Vathek seemed frustrated. "They have honor and pride, while we have none of that! We don't deserve any of that either." "Whatever." Cedric smiled. "I'm always lost when you start talking about things like honor. Everyone understands honor in a different way, my friend. It's not like there is the same honor for everyone, like some code." "Maybe you're right, Cedric. But my honor goes against slaughtering innocent people." "Rebels are not innocent! They're criminals and renegades! They are the ones who started this! They refused to obey the laws and that is a crime!" "What laws? To hell with such laws!" Vathek shouted. "A law to give away all of your food and then starve to death? I wouldn't obey either, if I was one of them. But instead of listening to my heart, I became a servant of the one I want to kill every single night! I trampled my honor, my dreams and my freedom just to live a pathetic life like this!" "You sound like a betrayer, Vathek." Cedric stated in a very poisonous voice. "d**n right I do." Vathek stood proud. "But not because I speak against Phobos. If I'd leave him, it wouldn't be betrayal." "Are you gonna abandon us just like some other fools did?" Cedric smiled. "Look at them now! Where are they? Rotting and being eaten by worms!" "It's better to fight and rot, than to comply and thrive, having to face your honor every night! You don't know how heavy my heart is sometimes! Sometimes I spend nights staring at the moon or beating myself up!" "Then you're dumb." "Don't you dare say that!" Vathek growled. "Why not?" Cedric asked in a seemingly innocent voice. "If I'm right, then you really are dumb. If you're right and you're a traitor, then you shouldn't be angry when I insult your pride... You're just confused, Vathek! Go and take a nap, everything will seem nicer when you wake up!" "I can't! I can't sleep! I can't smile or laugh anymore and even if I do, I'm just fooling myself!" "Vathek, you're not a crybaby, you're a warrior! Shut up and act like one!"
Vathek really shut up. Cedric was surprised. He looked at Vathek and tried to understand what's he thinking, but Vathek's head was lowered and a shadow covered his face. Alright then, Cedric thought. I'll just take my leave.
Cedric passed his friend and was heading for the castle, when Vathek finally replied. "Thank you, Cedric..." Vathek whispered. "You have no idea how much your words helped me!" "Eerr.... Okay," Cedric raised his eyebrows. "Sure, no problem! Have a good day now..."
With that said, he left for the Castle. [Exit: Lord Cedric to the Castle]
Vathek kept standing still and breathing heavily. He was frustrated and angry, but he also felt free. The warrior finally knew what to do.

[Enter: Vathek from the Throne Room]
Vathek simply ran through the forest, trying to track down Caleb - his tracks weren't very clear, but Vathek still managed to find the way. So he followed the rebel leader to the mountains.

[Enter: Caleb from the Mountains]
Caleb slowly made his way through the forest. He told the rebels that he's off to look for Blunk, but that was an excuse. Finding the little thing was truly a challenging task, especially in the middle of the castle - 'cause that's where Blunk was supposed to be now. So Caleb had no intention to search for him. He knew that Blunk will find him, when the time will be right, and maybe even with Vathek. Caleb left the camp because he wanted to think - and he didn't want the rebels disturbing him. Sure, he loved them. He really liked listening to their laughter and seeing them smile, but right now he wanted to be alone. He looked up, into the night sky. Somehow, with all recent adventures and missions, Caleb failed to sense the night approaching. But when he got back and sat down, the night came into his mind and his soul. And so he came here, where it was very quiet. There were no clouds in the sky and Caleb gazed into the moon and the stars. The tall trees were covered by moonlight and looked almost magical - well, such beauty had to... But then he remembered Cornelia, and everything else became blurry and colorless. No tree, no moon, no human being in the world was beautiful enough to even compare to her. Caleb could clearly see her face, her shining eyes and that enchanting smile that killed him the day they met and from his ashes, something better ascended. He could hear her voice, more beautiful than any musical instrument or nature's sound. It sounded a bit like the leaves... the trees speaking, only it was thousands, no... millions of times more beautiful. Caleb blinked. Was he crying? Probably. Pain was inseparable from love and now, when he was all alone and she was so far away from him, the pain surged through his body, tearing his sanity, his strength apart. Caleb almost stumbled and fell. A cold wind blew through his hair, but Caleb's forehead was burning. The flames were burning somewhere deep inside him and he could only writhe around in agony. "Cornelia." Caleb whispered into the wind.

Still being torn apart by sadness, Caleb reached the top of a steep hill. He climbed up and looked down, into the silver river. The view was enchanting, as if the river was something more, an another world, calm and voiceless, but most importantly - cold. Caleb felt a need to jump into the cold water and try to ease the pain, extinguish the flames. Suddenly, he heard a strange noise behind him - as if someone would be making his way through shrubs. "Who's there?" Caleb asked, quickly turning around and grabbing his sword. "Show yourself!" Unfortunately, he tripped and fell down from the hill, straight into the river. A dream come true, only in a very wrong way. Slowly, Goenn and another rebel emerged from the shadows and looked down with guilty expressions. Caleb was nowhere to be seen. "Told you we shouldn't disturb him." Goenn said, chewing a potato.

Just a little after that, elsewhere in the woods
Aldarn was glad. He made a mistake earlier but he managed to man up and admit it in front of at least a thousand of others. He was even more satisfied that others joined him. But now came the hardest part. He and his mob had to find Caleb and then convince him to allow them back.
The rebel leader was clever. He probably already set up a new rebel hideout, at least for the time being. It was going to be hard to find him. But the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step after all, so... "Ca--" Aldarn started shouting, when suddenly the very man himself jumped from the shrubs and crossed their path. "--leb... Caleb!" The ex-rebel couldn't believe his luck. He wanted to run at his friend right away and pretend the whole courtyard thing didn't happen at all. But Caleb was probably furious, and he had every right to be.
Aldarn's smile vainished, knowing that just finding the rebel leader wasn't enough. "Caleb..." he repeated again. "I... I don't know how to put this but..." His own words 'beg for his forgiveness' came to mind and Aldarn didn't really know any better way to express his shame. So he knelt down and started. "We've been fools, Caleb. We were blinded by false promises and acted against our better judgement." He briefly paused, looking for the proper words. "Words can't describe my shame, Caleb. We're not worthy of being called rebels. But on behalf of everyone here..." Another dramatic pause in which Aldarn almost threw himself at Caleb's feet. "I beg of you... Please give us another chance!"

"Well..." Caleb didn't know what to say. Why such a sudden change? A few hours ago Aldarn said all those things about him being reckless and fighting the war for himself, and now... Anyway, Caleb never liked when people treated him as superior - it was way too uncomfortable. It could have been a trap of some sort, but the rebels would have never agreed to do something like this on their free will and Caleb didn't believe that Phobos would have enough power to hypnotize four hundreds. So if all this wasn't some grandiose joke, then he was supposed to be happy. Besides, Aldarn's eyes showed that he was telling the truth. "It's okay." Caleb said, looking around uncomfortably. "I shouldn't have stopped believing in you so quickly either." Not quite the way to greet deserters, even if they understand their mistake. "Well, as long as the people are safe, I guess it's okay." He tried again, but then he noticed that not all rebels were here. Drake was nowhere to be seen. "So I guess that some of the... rebels decided to stay in the castle, right?" Caleb asked. "Where's Drake?"

"He... He stayed behind." Aldarn admitted. "I couldn't convince him to join us." Aldarn looked away. Drake was a valuable comrade but now he was blinded by Phobos' false promises... "Caleb. We won't disapoint you again!"I think it's around this time that someone else can take over the rebellion's role.

In my opinion, you're doing great. "I see..." Caleb said with regret. "It seems I was wrong about him after all. But at least I wasn't wrong about you, Aldarn." He put his hand on Aldarn's shoulder and smiled sadly. "Well, if you're back to being yourself, then we shouldn't waste time talking here. You can apologize through your actions, for we have a lot to do."

"And we definitely don't have time to stand around." Caleb added, because Aldarn didn't say anything. "Come everyone, I'll lead you to our new... base. Just don't freeze to death when you get there."

[Enter: Caleb and the rebels from... somewhere]
As Caleb entered the forest followed by the bunch of rebels, nausea suddenly assaulted him. His body became feverish and cold sweat almost immediately soaked his clothing. Caleb shook his head, trying to get a hold of himself. The closest rebels looked at him, all confused.
"I'm okay." Without giving them time to even ask, Caleb stated. His voice was trembling, so it wasn't very reassuring. "Just.. a headache, that's all. I haven't been getting enough sleep lately."
That phrase sounded ridiculous even to him. Everybody here was lacking sleep, rest, food and whatever else. Many were wounded or broken in other, worse ways. Complaining about a lack of sleep sounded almost ignorant. But it wasn't all. Caleb tried to collect his thoughts and remember the past few days. Everything was quite blurry, however - almost like it happened months ago, while it's actually been days or even less.
"Something's weird" Caleb muttered to himself. "I this Phobos' doing?"
"Caleb." An elderly man spoke to him. "This may sound cold. But we've been following you for a while now and it's gotten us nowhere. We need a place to rest and we need it now."
"Of course." Caleb replied. A part of him kind of wanted to strangle the old fart though. "I'll find us a home, I promise."
Yeah, that should be easy. It's not like he's forgotten the landscape or anything. Just a little bit farther...

After two hours of restless walking, Caleb and his bunch accidentally stumbled upon a small cavern, hidden from sight by hills and thick shrubbery. To get there, one had to take a narrow path between rocks - a path they wouldn't have taken, if Caleb didn't want to conceal their movements. The cavern seemed like a perfect spot for a temporary base. Almost too perfect, in fact. If not for sheer luck, they wouldn't have found the place.
After a quick inspection, Caleb left the place and confirmed it's safe. "Alright, this should do it." Caleb exhaled with relief. Somehow, taking care of the rebels has become a bit too burdening. It was as if they ceased to think for themselves and started relying on him whenever possible. No doubt Phobos would have liked such followers, but Caleb never wanted control for himself.
"Gather some food, water and firewood." He gave orders to different groups of people. "Scout the area for soldiers, but don't engage - under any circumstances. If you get discovered, just..."
"Just scram" he wanted to say., but swallowed those words.
"Just flee. That is all."
With that, Caleb turned around and started heading back to the city.
"Caleb, wait." A voice behind him arose.
"What is it?" He answered without turning around.
"Where are you going?"
That is none of your d**n bussiness, you know. I don't answer to you. I don't answer to any of you.
"To the city." Caleb replied instead. "We have to stay on top of things, if we are to succeed."
With that, he rushed away, not listening anymore.

[Enter: Caleb from the city alleys]
Caleb finally managed to outrun his pursuers - since they were off-duty, the soldiers had no heavy armor or weaponry, instead wearing light leather and wielding regular swords. Because of that, they were far more dangerous than regular brutes Caleb would normally have to deal with. Even now, he wasn't sure about his safety. Maybe they're somewhere close by and he just can't hear them because of the wind shuffling through the countless leaves of the forest? Now he couldn't go back to the rebels' improvised base, so Caleb just wandered around, cautiously observing the surroundings and trying not to leave any tracks.
It looked safe. The soldiers are usually too lazy to persist anyway. These four weren't even supposed to be on patrol, so Caleb didn't expect any zeal from them. But who knows? Maybe these four were the Elite Hunters of the Eclipse or something. You can never be sure about these things.
Caleb spotted a clearing ahead. Somebody was there. Somebody big and blue. It could be Vathek. It must have been Vathek. But it also could have been...
"The Blueberry Man." Caleb whispered in an ecstatic voice. "When naughty children go into the forest to shamelessly eat blueberries instead of the meals their mothers worked so hard to make, the Blueberry man comes and... and eats them. No, that's wrong. He lies in wait, surrounded by blueberry shrubs... and then leaps out and scares them to death! The children are found frozen in fear, their mouths agape, their hands... dirty with blueberries they crushed in their last moments of terror."
But yeah, it was probably Vathek, so Caleb went ahead to talk to him.
