Nickelodeon has just greenlit a new animated series from Avatar: the Last Airbender creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. According to the network's president, Brown Johnson, the series-- currently titled The Legend of Korra-- will be expanding the mythology of the Avatar franchise, setting it roughly 70 years after the original show's events with a whole new cast of characters. "Mike and Bryan have imagined a compelling new story inspired by the Airbender mythology that they so brilliantly crafted when the TV series began," Johnson said. "This new avatar is not only a girl, but also hot-headed, independent and ready to take on the world." The Legend of Korra follows the adventures of a "passionate, rebellious and fearless" teenager from the Southern Water Tribe, a girl named Korra. Having already mastered three of the four elements (Earth, Water, and Fire), she seeks to master the final element of Air. Her travels eventually lead her to the metropolis of Republic City, an epicenter for the modern Avatar world. Although a thriving society of benders and non-benders alike, Republic City is also ridden with crime, including an anti-bending rebellion that is gaining momentum. Under the guidance of Aang's son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training as she confronts the dangers ahead of her. The Legend of Korra will be produced at Nickelodeon Animation Studios and is expected to begin airing sometime in 2011. yup yeps! So excited! Can't wait to see Aang's son as well! (although he'd probably be middle aged)

Or maybe older? I'm calling it right now that Tenzin is going to be the Uncle Iroh of this series. Aaaah I'm jazzed for this. I can't help but wonder about the fates of all the characters in the time that has passed. Where they are if they're still around...what kind of life they ended up living... Stuff like that. Certainly seems like mastering the elements is not going to be a focal point this time around.

Say. 70 years is a bit short, isn't it? Considdering this Korra character is apparently the new avatar, which means Aang has passed away. And that in turn means Aang only became 82 (+100 from the iceberg. But they hardly mentioned that past the first five episodes of the original anyway) I remember some sources stating that Roku went well past 100 without icebergs and Kyoshi became as old as 400. So 82 (or 182, courtesy of the iceberg) seems a little on the short side for Avatar standards. Oh well. I'm just wondering where they'll be going with this spinoff. EDIT: I forgot to account for Korra's age... Subtract however old she is from Aang's asumed age.

I read in an interview this week with one of the creators that when Aang was in the iceberg he burned off a lot of his Avatar years hence why its been only 70 years. I think out of all the characters Toph is the one who I'm most eager to find out what happened to her.

Aw... I was hoping for a pivotal plot point surrounding the bald kid... For once, I thought I had it all figured out... I kid. But I am kind of wondering how Zuko has been doing. It'd be a shame if they put him on a bus too, since his family is also notorious for having long lifespans. (Sozin out-aged Roku, after all and Azulon was also reaching into seniority. And some dialogue suggests that he easilly could've added quite some years more on his calendar had it not been for that mysterious night surrounding Ursa's disappearance) We needs moar old characters!

I'm the kind of person who would prefer to watch and experience this show on an actual TV, not a computer monitor. Not having seen those seasons is just another reason why I'm getting them on DVD.

Yea that's all I ever see listed in the TV guide most of the time. I've never seen Avatar listed anymore. I think they give it on the Nicktoons channel but I don't have that. Whatever I'm getting the DVDs like I said. I actually want to have the complete series.

Well Tridy if you want to watch it in the meantime you can download the series online and rip it to a DvD so you could watch it on TV. And they only give it on Nicktoons Network these days.
